The Drifters are an American R&B group formed in 1953, who became one of the most successful vocal groups in history. The Drifters went through numerous lineup changes, with different eras defined by different lead singers. The Ben E. King era produced classics like 'There Goes My Baby' and 'Save the Last Dance for Me.' Later lineups had hits with 'Under the Boardwalk,' 'Up on the Roof,' and 'Saturday Night at the Movies.' The Drifters' smooth harmonies and sophisticated production helped define the transition from doo-wop to soul. They worked with legendary producers and songwriters including Leiber and Stoller and Bert Berns. Despite legal battles over the name and numerous lineup changes, The Drifters continue performing. They represent R&B vocal group excellence across multiple eras, creating timeless songs that transcended their time.
