Dr. John (born Mac Rebennack in 1941) was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist who became the embodiment of New Orleans music and culture. Dr. John's music combined blues, jazz, funk, and R&B with voodoo-influenced imagery and New Orleans traditions. His 1968 album 'Gris-Gris' established his mysterious, swampy sound. The hit 'Right Place Wrong Time' brought him mainstream success. Dr. John's piano playing and gravelly voice were distinctive, and his music celebrated New Orleans musical heritage. He won six Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dr. John collaborated with countless artists and served as a guardian of New Orleans musical traditions. He passed away in 2019, remembered as one of New Orleans' greatest musical ambassadors and a unique voice in American music who kept the city's musical traditions alive.
