Donald Byrd was an American jazz trumpeter born in 1932, who achieved success in both hard bop and jazz-funk. Byrd began as a hard bop trumpeter, recording numerous albums for Blue Note Records and leading groups featuring young musicians including Herbie Hancock. His playing was characterized by a crisp tone and bebop-influenced phrasing. In the 1970s, Byrd shifted to jazz-funk with albums like 'Black Byrd' and 'Street Lady,' achieving commercial success and influencing hip-hop through extensive sampling. This commercial turn was controversial among jazz purists but brought jazz to new audiences. Byrd was also an educator, teaching at numerous universities. He passed away in 2013. Byrd demonstrated jazz's adaptability, successfully moving from hard bop to funk while maintaining musical quality. His influence extends from traditional jazz into hip-hop through sampling.
