Doctor and the Medics are a British glam rock band formed in London in 1981, led by Clive Jackson (The Doctor). The band achieved major success in 1986 with their psychedelic cover of Norman Greenbaum's 'Spirit in the Sky,' which topped the UK charts. Their theatrical image, combining gothic and psychedelic elements, made them visually distinctive. Despite the massive success of 'Spirit in the Sky,' Doctor and the Medics were unable to replicate this success and became essentially a one-hit wonder. Their music combined 1960s psychedelic influences with 1980s production and gothic imagery. The band continued performing on the nostalgia circuit and at festivals. Doctor and the Medics represented 1980s British pop's more eccentric wing, demonstrating that theatrical presentation and psychedelic influences could achieve commercial success, if only briefly.
