Artist: Dobie Gray
Genre: Soul
Dobie Gray was an American soul singer born in 1940, who achieved success in both the 1960s and 1970s with different musical styles. Gray's first major hit was 'The In Crowd' in 1965, a soul-pop song that became his signature. In 1973, he scored his biggest hit with 'Drift Away,' a soul-rock song that became a classic and has been covered by numerous artists. Gray's versatile voice allowed him to move between soul, pop, and country-influenced music. He also worked as a songwriter and session singer. Despite having two significant hits separated by nearly a decade, Gray was unable to maintain consistent chart success. He passed away in 2011. Gray is remembered for 'Drift Away,' one of the most beloved songs of the 1970s, and for his smooth, soulful voice that bridged multiple genres.
