Dexys Midnight Runners were a British pop band formed in Birmingham in 1978 by Kevin Rowland. The band achieved major success with their distinctive sound combining soul, Celtic folk, and new wave. Their biggest hit 'Come On Eileen' in 1982 topped charts worldwide and became one of the 1980s' most recognizable songs. Other hits included 'Geno' and 'Jackie Wilson Said.' Dexys went through several distinct phases, from soul-influenced new wave to Celtic-influenced pop-soul. Rowland's passionate vocals and the band's ever-changing image and sound made them unique. Despite commercial success, internal tensions led to lineup changes and periods of inactivity. Dexys reformed several times, with Rowland as the constant. They represented British pop's more passionate, unconventional side, creating music driven by vision rather than commercial calculation.
