Artist: Desmond Dekker
Genre: Ska
Desmond Dekker was a Jamaican ska and reggae singer born in 1941, who became one of the first reggae artists to achieve international success. Dekker's biggest hit was 'Israelites' in 1968, which topped the UK charts and became one of the first internationally successful reggae songs. Other hits included '007 (Shanty Town)' and 'It Mek.' Dekker's music helped introduce ska and reggae to international audiences, paving the way for Bob Marley and others. His distinctive voice and ability to create catchy, socially conscious songs made him hugely popular. Dekker maintained his career for decades, particularly in the UK where he remained beloved. He passed away in 2006. Dekker represented reggae's international breakthrough, demonstrating that Jamaican music could achieve worldwide success and helping establish reggae as a major global genre.
