Del Shannon was an American rock and roll singer born Charles Westover in 1934, who became one of the early 1960s' most successful artists. Shannon's biggest hit 'Runaway' in 1961 featured his distinctive falsetto and became a worldwide number one hit. Other hits included 'Hats Off to Larry,' 'Little Town Flirt,' and 'Keep Searchin'.' Shannon's music combined rock and roll with pop sensibilities and his use of the Musitron (an early synthesizer) on 'Runaway' was pioneering. He was among the first American artists to cover Beatles songs and maintained his career through the British Invasion better than many contemporaries. Shannon struggled with depression and passed away in 1990. He's remembered as one of rock and roll's most talented and distinctive voices, creating timeless pop-rock with emotional depth and musical innovation.
