His hits included 'Cara Mia,' which topped the UK charts and sold over two million copies worldwide, 'Answer Me,' and 'The Adoration Waltz.' Whitfield's style bridged popular music and opera, bringing classical vocal techniques to pop audiences. He was particularly popular with adult audiences and represented pre-rock and roll pop vocal style. Whitfield's career declined with the rise of rock and roll, though he continued performing. He passed away in 1980. Whitfield represented British pop singing before rock and roll, demonstrating that classical vocal training could create major pop success in the pre-Elvis era.
