David Knopfler is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist born in 1952, who co-founded Dire Straits with his brother Mark Knopfler. David played rhythm guitar on Dire Straits' first two albums before leaving the band in 1980. He pursued a solo career, releasing numerous albums that explored roots rock, folk, and Americana. David's songwriting is thoughtful and literate, though he never achieved the commercial success of his brother. His guitar playing, while more understated than Mark's, is accomplished. David has maintained an independent career, valuing artistic freedom over commercial success. He represents musicians who leave successful bands to pursue their own vision, demonstrating integrity and independence even when it means less commercial success. David Knopfler continues recording and touring, maintaining a devoted following among roots rock fans.
