David Johansen is an American singer-songwriter and actor born in 1950, best known as the lead singer of the New York Dolls before reinventing himself as lounge singer Buster Poindexter. With the New York Dolls, Johansen pioneered glam punk and proto-punk, influencing punk rock's development. After the Dolls split, Johansen pursued a solo career with moderate success. His Buster Poindexter persona, created in the mid-1980s, brought him mainstream success with the novelty hit 'Hot Hot Hot.' Johansen's ability to reinvent himself demonstrated his versatility and showmanship. He has also acted in films and theater. Johansen represents New York's downtown rock and roll scene at its most theatrical and innovative, successfully transitioning between different musical personas while maintaining artistic credibility. The New York Dolls have reunited several times.
