Darkthrone are a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1986, becoming one of the most influential bands in black metal. Originally a death metal band, Darkthrone helped pioneer the second wave of black metal with albums like 'A Blaze in the Northern Sky,' 'Under a Funeral Moon,' and 'Transilvanian Hunger.' Their lo-fi production, tremolo-picked guitars, blast beats, and anti-commercial stance became black metal templates. The duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto has maintained Darkthrone as a deliberately underground, uncommercial project, refusing to perform live or compromise their vision. Their later work has incorporated punk and crust influences. Darkthrone represents black metal's most uncompromising approach, valuing artistic purity over commercial success. They remain hugely influential in extreme metal, demonstrating that artistic integrity and underground status can coexist with significant cultural influence.
