The Danse Society were an English gothic rock band formed in Barnsley in 1980, becoming part of the early gothic rock movement. The band consisted of Steve Rawlings, Paul Nash, Lyndon Scarfe, Tim Wright, and Paul Gilmartin. The Danse Society created atmospheric, dark post-punk and gothic rock with their biggest success being 'Wake Up' which received club play. Their music featured dramatic vocals, prominent bass lines, and atmospheric keyboards typical of gothic rock. Albums like 'Seduction' showcased their ability to create dark, danceable music. Despite their quality and influence on the gothic scene, The Danse Society never achieved major commercial success. They disbanded in 1987 but reformed in 2011. The band represented British gothic rock's more dance-oriented wing, demonstrating that gothic music could be both dark and rhythmically compelling.
