D.O.A. are a Canadian punk rock band formed in Vancouver in 1978, becoming pioneers of hardcore punk and punk's political wing. Led by Joey 'Shithead' Keithley, D.O.A. created fast, aggressive punk rock with explicitly political lyrics addressing social justice, anti-war, and anti-fascist themes. They coined the term 'hardcore' to describe their faster, more aggressive punk style. D.O.A.'s influence on hardcore punk in North America is substantial, with their early albums inspiring countless punk and hardcore bands. Their DIY ethic and political commitment made them important beyond music. Despite numerous lineup changes, Keithley has maintained D.O.A. for over four decades. The band represents punk's most politically committed wing, demonstrating that punk could be a vehicle for serious political activism. D.O.A. continues touring and recording, maintaining their uncompromising approach.
