Curved Air were a British progressive rock band formed in 1970, known for being one of the first rock bands to feature a female lead vocalist and for their innovative use of synthesizers. Fronted by Sonja Kristina, the band also featured violinist Darryl Way and keyboardist Francis Monkman. Their debut album 'Air Conditioning' was the first picture disc album. Curved Air's music combined progressive rock complexity with pop accessibility, featuring classical influences, electronic experimentation, and Kristina's distinctive vocals. Their biggest hit was 'Back Street Luv' in 1971. The band went through numerous lineup changes and periods of activity and inactivity. Curved Air influenced the development of progressive rock and demonstrated that prog could incorporate female vocalists and synthesizers effectively. Though they never achieved the success of some prog contemporaries, Curved Air remain respected as innovative pioneers.
