The Cult are an English rock band formed in Bradford in 1983 by vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy. The band evolved from gothic rock beginnings to become a major hard rock act. Their early albums like 'Dreamtime' featured post-punk and gothic influences, but by 'Electric' (1987) they had embraced heavy rock and metal, working with producer Rick Rubin. The Cult's hits included 'She Sells Sanctuary,' 'Love Removal Machine,' 'Fire Woman,' and 'Edie (Ciao Baby).' Their music combined mystical, spiritual themes with powerful guitar riffs and Astbury's distinctive vocals. The Cult successfully bridged alternative rock and hard rock, appealing to both audiences. Despite lineup changes (Astbury and Duffy being the constants), The Cult have continued recording and touring. They influenced numerous alternative and hard rock bands, demonstrating that gothic sensibilities could translate into arena rock success.
