Artist: Crusaders
Genre: Jazz Fusion
The Crusaders were an American jazz fusion group formed in Houston in the 1950s, originally known as The Jazz Crusaders. The group featured Joe Sample on keyboards, Wilton Felder on saxophone and bass, Stix Hooper on drums, and Wayne Henderson on trombone. The Crusaders pioneered the fusion of jazz with R&B, soul, and funk, creating accessible, groove-based jazz. Their biggest hit was 'Street Life' in 1979, featuring vocalist Randy Crawford, which became a jazz-funk classic. The Crusaders' music emphasized groove and soul over complex bebop improvisation, making jazz accessible to wider audiences. They influenced the development of smooth jazz and contemporary R&B. The group released numerous successful albums and collaborated with many artists. The Crusaders demonstrated that jazz could incorporate funk and soul grooves while maintaining musical sophistication, influencing countless fusion and jazz-funk artists.
