Artist: Count Basie
Genre: Jazz
Count Basie was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer born in 1904, who became one of the most important figures in jazz history. Basie led one of the most successful big bands in jazz for nearly 50 years, from the 1930s until his death in 1984. The Count Basie Orchestra was known for its swinging, economical style, featuring the 'All-American Rhythm Section' and showcasing great soloists. Basie's piano playing was characterized by sparse, perfectly timed notes that demonstrated that less could be more. His orchestra's hits included 'One O'Clock Jump,' 'April in Paris,' and 'Jumpin' at the Woodside.' The Basie band became synonymous with swing and served as a training ground for numerous jazz legends. Basie won multiple Grammy Awards and maintained his orchestra's excellence through changing musical eras. He passed away in 1984, leaving a legacy as one of jazz's greatest bandleaders.
