The Communards were a British pop duo formed in 1985 by Jimmy Somerville (formerly of Bronski Beat) and classically trained musician Richard Coles. The duo achieved major success in the mid-to-late 1980s with their energetic, politically conscious pop. Their biggest hit was a cover of 'Don't Leave Me This Way,' which topped the UK charts and became one of the decade's biggest-selling singles. Other hits included 'Never Can Say Goodbye' and 'So Cold the Night.' The Communards' music combined Somerville's distinctive falsetto vocals with dance-pop production and orchestral elements. The duo was openly gay and politically active, using their platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and social justice. They disbanded in 1988, but their music remains important in LGBTQ+ culture and 1980s pop history.
