Club Nouveau were an American R&B and dance group formed in Sacramento in 1986 by producer/performer Jay King. The group achieved their greatest success with their 1986 cover of Bill Withers' 'Lean on Me,' which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award. Their version transformed the original into a contemporary R&B jam with modern production. Other hits included 'Why You Treat Me So Bad' and 'Situation #9.' Club Nouveau's music represented the late 1980s trend of updating classic soul songs with contemporary production techniques. Their sound combined R&B, dance-pop, and hip-hop influences with smooth vocals and sophisticated production. Despite lineup changes, King maintained the group through various incarnations. Club Nouveau represented the evolution of R&B in the late 1980s, demonstrating how classic soul could be reimagined for contemporary audiences through modern production while respecting the original material.
