Clark Terry was an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player born in 1920, who became one of jazz's most influential and beloved musicians. Terry played with Count Basie and Duke Ellington's orchestras before establishing a successful career as a bandleader and soloist. He was known for his technical virtuosity, sense of humor, and innovative use of the flugelhorn in jazz. Terry was a pioneer in jazz education, teaching and mentoring countless young musicians including Quincy Jones. His playing was characterized by clarity, swing, and the ability to make complex ideas sound effortless. Terry appeared on over 900 recordings and won multiple Grammy Awards. He was known for his scat singing style called 'mumbles.' Terry passed away in 2015 at age 94, leaving behind an enormous legacy as performer, educator, and jazz ambassador who dedicated his life to sharing jazz with the world.
