Christian Death are an American gothic rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1979 by Rozz Williams, becoming one of the pioneers of American gothic rock and deathrock. The band created dark, theatrical music combining punk energy with gothic atmospheres and controversial religious imagery. Their debut album 'Only Theatre of Pain' is considered a deathrock classic, featuring Williams' distinctive vocals and dark, provocative lyrics. Christian Death's music influenced the development of gothic rock in America and internationally. After Williams left in 1985, Valor Kand continued the band, leading to rival versions. Williams tragically died by suicide in 1998. Christian Death's legacy includes pioneering American gothic rock, demonstrating that gothic music could be both theatrical and genuinely dark. Their influence on gothic and industrial music has been substantial, inspiring numerous dark alternative bands. The band continues in various forms, maintaining their dark, provocative vision.
