Chelsea were an English punk rock band formed in London in 1976, considered one of the original UK punk bands though they never achieved the success of contemporaries like The Sex Pistols or The Clash. The band went through numerous lineup changes, with Gene October being the constant member. Chelsea's music was straightforward punk rock with melodic elements, influenced by both American punk and British pub rock. They released several albums including 'Chelsea' and 'Alternative Hits,' which demonstrated their ability to evolve beyond basic punk. Despite their longevity and influence on the UK punk scene, Chelsea remained underground. They were active through punk's various waves and continue performing occasionally. Chelsea represented punk's DIY ethos and persistence, maintaining their commitment to the music despite limited commercial success. They influenced numerous punk and alternative bands who appreciated their authentic, uncompromising approach to punk rock.
