Champaign were an American R&B band formed in Champaign, Illinois, in 1979, best known for their 1981 hit 'How 'Bout Us.' The romantic ballad topped the R&B charts and became a crossover pop hit, establishing Champaign as a major R&B act. The song's gentle melody, smooth production, and romantic lyrics made it a favorite for slow dancing and romantic occasions. Champaign's music combined soul, R&B, and soft rock influences with polished production typical of early 1980s R&B. While they continued recording and performing, they were unable to replicate the massive success of 'How 'Bout Us' and became essentially a one-hit wonder. The song remains beloved as a classic romantic ballad and continues to be played on R&B and adult contemporary radio.
