Artist: Catherine Wheel
Genre: Alternative Rock
Catherine Wheel were an English alternative rock band formed in Great Yarmouth in 1990, consisting of Rob Dickinson, Brian Futter, Dave Hawes, and Neil Sims. The band was part of the shoegazing movement, creating layered, effects-heavy guitar rock. Their debut album 'Ferment' featured the hit 'Black Metallic,' which received significant alternative radio airplay. Catherine Wheel evolved from shoegaze toward more accessible alternative rock while maintaining their distinctive sound. Albums like 'Chrome' and 'Happy Days' demonstrated their progression. Dickinson's vocals and the band's ability to combine noise with melody made them distinctive. Despite critical acclaim and a devoted following, Catherine Wheel never achieved massive commercial success. They disbanded in 2000. The band represented shoegazing's evolution toward more accessible alternative rock, demonstrating that effects-heavy guitar music could be both experimental and melodic. They remain respected among shoegaze and alternative rock fans.
