Carmel were a British jazz-pop band formed in the early 1980s, fronted by vocalist Carmel McCourt. The band achieved success in the mid-1980s with their sophisticated blend of jazz, pop, and Latin influences. Their music was characterized by McCourt's distinctive, breathy vocals, Latin rhythms, and jazz-influenced arrangements. Hits included 'Bad Day' and 'Sally.' Carmel's sound was more sophisticated and jazz-oriented than typical 1980s pop, incorporating elements of bossa nova, swing, and contemporary pop. The band achieved particular success in Europe, especially France. Despite their quality and distinctive sound, Carmel never achieved massive commercial breakthrough but built a devoted following among fans of sophisticated pop. They represented 1980s alternative pop's more jazz-influenced wing, creating music that was both accessible and musically ambitious. Carmel McCourt has continued her musical career in various forms.
