Carcass are an English extreme metal band formed in Liverpool in 1985, pioneering both goregrind and melodic death metal. The band was founded by Bill Steer and Jeff Walker, with various members over the years. Carcass's early work featured extremely heavy, lo-fi death metal with medical and pathological themes. Albums like 'Reek of Putrefaction' and 'Symphonies of Sickness' are considered grindcore classics. The band evolved toward melodic death metal with albums like 'Heartwork,' which influenced the Gothenburg metal scene and melodic death metal development. Carcass demonstrated extreme metal could incorporate melody and musical sophistication. After initially splitting in 1996, Carcass reformed in 2007 and continues releasing albums.
