Caravan are an English progressive rock band formed in Canterbury in 1968, becoming one of the key bands of the Canterbury Scene. Founding members included Pye Hastings, Richard Sinclair, David Sinclair, and Richard Coughlan. Caravan created a distinctive style blending progressive rock with jazz influences, whimsical lyrics, and complex arrangements. Albums like 'In the Land of Grey and Pink' are considered Canterbury Scene classics. Their music featured extended instrumental passages, organ solos, and unconventional song structures, often with a lighter, more whimsical touch than other prog bands. Caravan went through numerous lineup changes but continued performing and recording across decades. They influenced progressive rock's more jazz-oriented wing and demonstrated that prog could be playful and sophisticated. Caravan remain active, representing the enduring appeal of Canterbury prog rock.
