Captain Sensible (born Raymond Burns in 1954) is an English musician best known as a member of The Damned, one of the pioneering British punk bands. As The Damned's bassist and later guitarist, Captain Sensible was integral to their sound and image. His stage name and eccentric personality made him a punk icon. In 1982, while still with The Damned, Captain Sensible had an unexpected solo hit with 'Happy Talk,' a cover from the musical 'South Pacific,' which topped the UK charts. This novelty hit contrasted sharply with his punk credentials. He released several solo albums exploring various styles from punk to psychedelic pop. Captain Sensible has remained active with The Damned through their various incarnations and reunions. His career demonstrates punk's more playful, eccentric side, proving that punk musicians could be both serious about their craft and willing to embrace absurdity and fun.
