Cabaret Voltaire were an English experimental electronic band formed in Sheffield in 1973, consisting of Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk, and Chris Watson (who left in 1981). The band were pioneers of industrial music, creating groundbreaking experimental electronic and noise music. Their early work featured tape manipulation, found sounds, and avant-garde experimentation. As they evolved, Cabaret Voltaire incorporated elements of funk, dance music, and house into their industrial sound. Albums like 'The Crackdown' and 'Micro-Phonies' demonstrated their ability to make experimental music accessible. The band influenced countless electronic, industrial, and alternative artists. They disbanded in 1994 but reformed in 2009. Cabaret Voltaire represented the cutting edge of electronic experimentation, demonstrating that industrial music could be both challenging and danceable, influencing genres from techno to industrial rock.
