Bronski Beat were an English synth-pop trio formed in London in 1983, consisting of Jimmy Somerville, Steve Bronski, and Larry Steinbachek. The band achieved immediate success with their debut single 'Smalltown Boy,' which addressed gay issues and became a massive hit. Their debut album 'The Age of Consent' featured another hit, 'Why?,' and was groundbreaking in its open addressing of LGBTQ+ themes. Somerville's distinctive falsetto voice and the band's electronic production created a unique sound. Bronski Beat was important in bringing gay issues to mainstream pop audiences. Somerville left in 1985 to form The Communards, but Bronski Beat continued with different vocalists.
