Bread were an American soft rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1968, consisting of David Gates, James Griffin, Robb Royer (later replaced by Larry Knechtel), and Mike Botts. Bread achieved major early 1970s success with sophisticated soft rock sound featuring lush arrangements, tight harmonies, and memorable melodies. Their hits included 'Make It with You,' 'If,' 'Everything I Own,' and 'Baby I'm-a Want You.' David Gates' songwriting and soft, emotive vocals defined their sound, combining pop, folk, and soft rock influences. Bread's music epitomized early 1970s soft rock, offering radio-friendly, emotionally accessible songs.
