Billy Eckstine was an American jazz and pop singer born in 1914, known for his rich baritone voice and sophisticated style. Eckstine was one of the first African American singers to achieve mainstream success as a romantic balladeer, paving the way for later singers like Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis. His smooth, vibrato-rich vocals made him successful in both jazz and pop contexts. Eckstine led one of the most important 1940s jazz big bands, featuring young bebop innovators including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sarah Vaughan. His hits included 'Prisoner of Love,' 'My Foolish Heart,' and 'I Apologize.' He passed away in 1993.
