Benny Carter was an American jazz saxophonist, trumpeter, composer, and arranger born in 1907, who had one of jazz history's longest careers, spanning over eight decades. Carter was a pioneering alto saxophonist whose smooth, sophisticated style influenced countless musicians including Charlie Parker. Beyond performing, Carter was one of jazz's greatest arrangers, writing charts for big bands and orchestras. He was also one of the first African American musicians to work extensively in Hollywood, composing film scores and breaking racial barriers. Carter passed away in 2003 at age 95, leaving enormous legacy as performer, composer, arranger, and civil rights pioneer.
