Ash are a Northern Irish rock band formed in Downpatrick in 1992 by Tim Wheeler, Mark Hamilton, and Rick McMurray. They burst onto the British music scene in the mid-1990s as part of the Britpop movement, though their sound was more influenced by punk and American alternative rock. The band achieved significant success with albums like '1977' and 'Free All Angels,' containing hits including 'Girl from Mars,' 'Oh Yeah,' and 'Shining Light.'
