Anita O'Day was an American jazz singer born in 1919, considered one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time. O'Day first gained prominence in the 1940s as a singer with the Gene Krupa and Stan Kenton big bands, where her cool, swinging style and impeccable timing set her apart. Her vocal approach was influenced by instrumentalists, and she sang with a relaxed, rhythmic feel that emphasized swing and improvisation over emotional expression. O'Day struggled with drug addiction throughout much of her career but continued performing into her eighties. Her performances at jazz festivals, particularly her famous 1958 Newport Jazz Festival appearance captured in the film 'Jazz on a Summer's Day,' showcased her remarkable talent. O'Day passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy as one of jazz's most influential and distinctive singers.
