Alex Chilton was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, born in 1950, who achieved fame as a teenager with The Box Tops before becoming a cult hero as leader of Big Star. With The Box Tops, Chilton sang the soul-pop hit 'The Letter' at age 16. He later formed Big Star, whose albums '#1 Record' and 'Radio City' were commercial failures but are now considered power pop classics that influenced alternative rock. Chilton's work with Big Star combined Beatles-esque melodies with raw emotion and imperfect production, creating influential recordings that predated punk and alternative rock. After Big Star's dissolution, Chilton pursued an erratic solo career that explored various styles from punk to roots music. His influence on alternative and indie rock was enormous, with bands like R.E.M. and The Replacements citing him as an inspiration. Chilton passed away in 2010, leaving behind a legacy as a cult figure whose work was more influential than commercially successful.
