He performed traditional Scottish and English folk songs as well as contemporary folk material, serving as a mentor and inspiration to younger folk musicians. Campbell's approach to folk music was traditional and authentic, emphasizing the songs' stories and melodies. While he never achieved commercial success, he was respected within the folk community for his dedication to traditional music and his role in keeping folk traditions alive. Campbell passed away in 1987, remembered as a keeper of folk traditions who helped spread British folk music across Europe during the folk revival era.
